With the final puppy from our Buzz × Jessie PT.1 litter heading home, another chapter at Wirehaven Kennels comes to a close—and this is a litter we will remember for a long time. Seven puppies. Three males and four females. Seven individual personalities that reminded us exactly why we love raising German Wirehaired Pointers.

From the earliest weeks, the natural ability within this litter was truly remarkable. These puppies showed an incredible willingness to explore, use their noses, retrieve, investigate new environments, and—perhaps most importantly—cooperate with their handler. Their desire to work with people wasn't something that needed to be forced. It was simply there.

​

As they developed, we introduced them to grouse and pheasant scent, water exposure and water retrieves, new environments, different surfaces, unfamiliar situations, and countless everyday experiences designed to encourage confidence and curiosity.

​

What impressed us most was how naturally their instincts began to emerge.

​

The desire to search, investigate scent, carry objects, and retrieve was already ingrained. Several puppies naturally picked things up and brought them back, while their introduction to water gave them another opportunity to build confidence and demonstrate the natural retrieving instincts we were already seeing on land.

​

Watching young puppies confidently enter the water, swim, and make retrieves was another exciting glimpse into the natural ability developing throughout this litter. That combination of natural instinct, confidence, retrieving desire, independence, and cooperation with the handler is something we value tremendously at Wirehaven.

​

But this litter was about more than hunting ability.

​

We watched these puppies learn how to become companions and good citizens of society. They learned crates, leashes, recall, boundaries, vehicle rides, new places, different surfaces, other dogs, our house cat, children, strangers, public environments, and the everyday expectations that come with living alongside people.

​

At Wirehaven, we believe that part of development is every bit as important as preparing a dog for the field. These dogs live with us 365 days a year and must be able to handle the pressures of society before the pressures of the hunt. That is what we strive for.

​

A versatile hunting dog shouldn't only be capable when there are birds in front of it. We want dogs that can experience the world with confidence, understand boundaries, cooperate with their handler, settle when the work is over, and become enjoyable members of the family.​ They learned when it was time to explore—and when it was time to settle down.

​

That balance is exactly what we hoped Buzz and Jessie would produce.

Buzz brought the versatility, cooperation, retrieving instinct, intelligence, and proven ability that have made him such an important part of Wirehaven.

​

Jessie brought her own exceptional natural ability, biddability, athleticism, nose, and desire to work with her handler—the same qualities that helped her earn a NAVHDA Natural Ability Prize I with a perfect 112/112 score.

​

Watching those traits begin to appear in their puppies was incredibly rewarding. Every puppy developed differently, and every one will ultimately write its own story. Some will spend their falls pursuing upland birds. Others may discover different opportunities in the field. Some will primarily become devoted family companions. Many will get the opportunity to do a little bit of everything.

​

That is the beauty of the versatile hunting dog.
